Penniless and past their prime: Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt on life after fame

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Regrets: Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, pictured last year, say they regret the path their reality careers has taken in recent years

Their staged paparazzi pictures, ridiculous red carpet appearances and increasingly bizarre storylines on reality show The Hills gained them plenty of headlines in recent years.

But Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt - aka Speidi - admit now that their 'famous for being famous' career could never last.

The couple are now broke and living at Pratt's parents' house.

Cute couple: Speidi, pictured back in 2007 before the plastic surgery and bizarre behaviour, say they never actually broke up and their 'divorce' was a publicity stunt

In an interview with the Daily Beast, they admit their break-up, divorce petition and eventual reconciliation was all staged in a last-ditch effort to hold on to their fame.

'At that point, we were pulling our last cards,' Spencer, 27, tells the website. 'We felt the hot-air balloon losing its gas. And at that stage, our income would be selling the photo that would go along with the divorce.'

Banned: After a fight with with producers Spencer, pictured in the MTV show, was asked to leave

Speidi earned thousands at one point for creating staged photoshoots with paparazzi but as interest in them and their bizarre antics dwindled they began to run out of funds fast.

Montag, who turns 25 next month, estimates she spent $2million on her ill-fated pop career, while her husband has a $1million wardrobe.
